Your Questions AnsweredA little bit about the cycle
What do we want to achieve ?
We want to raise awareness of mental health issues that lead to people taking their own lives. We want to highlight the work of two of the many organisations that provide support. In the process help save 30 lives by generating funds to support prevention.
Why should we do it ?
The reasons why people take their lives are varied & complex. Government policies & public health can only do so much. The numbers are shocking. 55,000 per year in the EU with an estimated 10 times that number making an attempt. There were 459 suicides in Ireland in 2014 & 6122 in the UK.
Who is involved ?
We anticipate 40 key volunteers from Cork, Kerry, Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo and Donegal will help with publicity and organising groups of riders. Aided by support from locals. Local people and visitors will ride. Supported by employees of the two charities - Pieta House and Mind.
How to make a difference?
Volunteers help publicise the ride and organise the on-the-day ride logistics. We all make a difference by simply turning up and riding. As rider numbers increase, the media become more interested, the message that help is available reaches a wider audience including those at risk and their support network.
Where can people join?
Volunteers can reach coordinators in each county or use this websites "Contact" page. Riders should register using the "Contact" page and details will be supplied. We are looking into the possibility of joining mid stage and cycling a shorter stage.
When does it take place?
The ride begins in Kinsale on Sat 18th Feb 2017 and finishes in Derry on Sun 6th Aug. There are three parts - Cork & Kerry in Feb, Clare, Galway & Mayo in April, Sligo, Donegal & Derry in Jul/Aug. 24 stages averaging 114km per stage.
